- Billion Graves
BillionGraves.com is a site launched in May of 2011, designed to gather photographs of grave markers with assistance of Taphophile worldwide. The volunteer taphophiles scour cemeteries photographing headstones with their iPhone and Android cellphones, which will record the exact GPS location of the grave. After these photos are uploaded they are available online for transcription from more volunteers. Searching the site for your family names is free, but there are additional upgrades you can earn by participating or contributing in the photographing and transcribing process. If you want those other features there is a nominal fee. Online maps and geographical coordinates may make future cemetery trips something like Geo-Caching for ancestors. www.billiongraves. com
- FindAGrave - FREE
- If there is no listing for your family member you can sign up and add the listing.
-If there is no picture of the grave and you would like one simply place a photo request. If any volunteers are available in that area they may photograph the grave for you.
-You can add personal photos, leave virtual flowers, and messages on the memorial pages.
Although Ancestry.com purchased findAgrave in 2013, it remains a FREE site.

- Ancestry.com
Cost? Almost always a free two weeks for first-timers. A credit card is required to sign up, but if you decided to terminate your subscription you can still keep using the online layout.
-Ancestry will continue to send you tempting hints (that wiggly leaf) but a paid subscription is not required to use the 'tree', You can often take those details and trace them on other sites, like familysearch.org. Always multi-check every source when available!
-Consider the money you can save by not buying software.
-Your tree doesn't have to be on your hard-drive. Consider the risk of keeping your files on your PC or laptop. Imagine losing those files.
-You can choose your level of privacy.
-Many Ancestry databases are free to access. Sometimes only the index is free. Images will require a subscription. Ancestry will help you find what you are looking for.

Genealogybank is a leading online genealogical resource that features a wealth of exclusive material including historic newspapers (1690 - 2007 ) , Historic Obituaries (1704 - 1999), modern obituaries (1977 - Today), as well as books, pamphlets, military records, government documents, and The Social Security Death Index (1937–Today).
-Cost? a bargain at $69.95 for a years subscription. Can you even buy a subscription of a current newspaper for that? Genealogybank often offers discounts, its a good idea to get on the email list and watch for 'em!
TIP - although you may be tempted to just search the area (city/state) where your ancestors lived, always try a broader search, and multiple spellings.
- I gained some eye-opening perspective on my family history through newspapers, including a graphic description of a suicide, another ancestor who was referred to as a "River Pirate" and how my husbands family kept Irish Slaves in New Jersey!
- Newspapers.com is a division of Ancestry.com that also provides access to early newspapers. You might find that some newspapers in a community are on Newspaper.com and others are found on Genealogybank. Its a good idea to take advantage of any free trials, to discern how much unique value there will be for you in each collection.
Like they said in the movie Newsies, "If it's not in the papers, it didn't happen "
